The Virginia PTA recognized Hardy Elementary PTA for its outstanding efforts to address a wide range of critical issues impacting students, families, and staff. From transportation to teacher compensation and infrastructure, Hardy’s PTA has become a powerful voice for the school community.
Notably, the PTA successfully advocated for the replacement of aging school buses, helping secure funding for five new buses this year with additional purchases planned over the next two years. They also pushed for higher bus driver salaries to reduce route splitting and ensure consistent, safe transportation for all students.
Their advocacy extended beyond transportation. Hardy PTA members championed full funding for the Isle of Wight County Schools budget, supported a 3% staff salary increase, and lobbied for infrastructure improvements and updated Career and Technical Education equipment. Their strategy included a robust presence at school board meetings, writing letters to the editor, and mobilizing community support through social media. These efforts have led to meaningful, tangible results.
“The Hardy Elementary PTA has shown what’s possible when families come together with purpose and persistence,” said Leigh Handley, President of the Hardy PTA. “We raised our voices at school board meetings, in the newspaper, on social media, and even at Capitol Day, turning advocacy into action. Advocacy can be daunting, and progress often feels slow, but with dedication, we’ve set a course toward lasting change. Our goal has always been to empower families and unite our community. We hope the legacy we’re building will inspire advocacy for years to come.”
Leigh Handley and PTA Treasurer Tiffany Parker represented Hardy Elementary at the Legacy and Impact Awards Dinner, where they accepted the honor on behalf of the entire PTA.
