Smithfield High Students Garner Awards in Engineering Competition

For the second year in a row, engineering students from Smithfield High swept the award categories at the Eastern Virginia SEAL Challenge, winning best execution for being the quickest teams in all categories to complete the challenges.  The competition, held in May, is composed of three distinct categories.   In the Sea Challenge, students built a submersible remote operated vehicle (ROV) that placed numbered blocks in corresponding numbered boxes using only a camera and remote control to navigate the robot.  The team of Hannah Brisson, Benjamin Ray and Katie Dodson finished first in the Sea Challenge. In the Land Challenge, students built a robot that navigated through a debris field to put numbered blocks in corresponding numbered boxes, again using only cameras on the robot and remote control.  Aidan Gibson was the team member and winning team for this challenge.  In the Air Challenge, students built a drone that dropped a payload in designated boxes.  The drone used a camera to read QR codes and the students relied on a remote control to fly and drop the payload. The team of Aiden Hall and Logan Neal were the winning team in the challenge.   Coaches for the teams were Adam Shipman, Manufacturing teacher, and Heather Greer, Engineering teacher.
