Each quarter, IWCS recognizes a support staff member who has gone Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. Anyone throughout the division is invited to submit nominations. A panel reviews the nominees and selects the quarterly winners. Our 2023-2024 1st quarter ABCD Award winner is Chris Brown, Administrative Associate, at Smithfield High School. The nomination for Mr. Brown from Mrs. Liane Pullen stated the following:
Mr. Brown is the first person to be seen when someone enters Smithfield High School. His positive presence sets the tone for those whom he interacts with, both in person and on the phone. When parents arrive to pick up their children early, he's the positive and respectful voice teachers hear at the other end of the phone line. Although his job duties do not include anything directly related to the classroom, he has recently gone above and beyond the call of duty. We all know the first week of school can be very hectic for everyone. One day last week, I gave up my lunch break while I waited for my turn at the copying machine. By the time it was my turn, the copier had run out of toner and I had run out of time. The bell rang and I needed to get back to my classroom. I was ready to have a meltdown and he read it all over my face. Before I broke down into tears, he immediately approached me, asked me what was wrong and what I needed. When I told him, he stepped in to help me without hesitation. He sent me to class and took care of the toner issue and made the photocopies I needed for my students. What a beautiful random act of kindness! It is with great honor that I would like to nominate Mr. Brown for the ABCD Above and Beyond the Call of duty recognition.
As part of his award, Mr. Brown is receiving a $50 Visa gift card thanks to the generous support of the Smithfield Women’s Club. He is also receiving a personalized plaque created in the Smithfield High School Maker Space.
