Smithfield High School Chorus received a generous $10,000 grant from Smithfield VA Events, made possible through proceeds from the 2025 Wine & Brew Fest. Under the direction of Katie West, the funds will be used to purchase new acoustical shells for the auditorium stage, significantly enhancing the sound quality of chorus performances. SHS and the chorus program are deeply grateful to Smithfield VA Events for their ongoing support of the arts and investment in student success.
Smithfield High School’s Welding Program, led by instructor Paul Miller, was awarded a $37,500 grant from the Virginia Department of Education to upgrade career and technical education (CTE) equipment. SHS is one of just 16 school divisions statewide to receive this competitive grant, which will be used to purchase a Multi-Process Welder. This initiative is part of a state-funded effort to align CTE programs with high-demand, fast-growth industries identified by the Virginia Office of Education Economics (VOEE).
Smithfield Middle School Chorus, under the direction of Rebecca Gardner, was selected for a grant from the Peter R. Marsh Foundation. The grant supports middle school music programs that engage with senior citizens through community performances and written reflections. The SMS Chorus plans to host a performance for local veteran groups in October and visit both the VA hospice unit in Hampton and a local nursing home. Once these performances and reflections are completed, the grant funds will be awarded to support the chorus program.
These grants reflect the strength and creativity of our music and CTE programs, and the dedication of our outstanding educators. Congratulations to all!
