Students in Jessica Jackman’s Art 2 class have been busy creating a scale model of downtown Smithfield out of cardboard. The structures include stores, restaurants and the Smithfield Post Office. Students used a variety of resources to ensure accuracy of each building, including any landscaping and signage visible from the street.
The idea came from a book about the art of cardboard that showed a similar project depicting New York City. The idea was funded by a Dominion Grant Jackman was awarded this school year for an "all green classroom". The cardboard used in the project was all recycled and grant money went towards supplies needed to paint and put together the structure.
The project was on display at the school’s expo on April 26. The entire model has been donated to the Smithfield Public Library and is now a permanent exhibit with the library.
